This exciting program offers young people (ages 6-17) a unique opportunity to become immersed in skateboard culture and learn skateboarding lessons from a certified instructor through the USSEA (US Skateboarding Education Association). We welcome all skill levels, from beginners who have never stepped on a board to those with some experience looking to improve their technique.

Our Goal:

This scholarship program aims to teach the youth about skateboarding as an athletic lifestyle, it's culture and the arts through skateboarding by:

Building Confidence: Skateboarding helps develop physical coordination, balance, and perseverance, leading to increased self-esteem.

Promoting Physical Activity: Encourage a healthy and active lifestyle through the fun and engaging sport of skateboarding.

Fostering Community: Create a positive and supportive environment where participants can connect with others who share their interests.

Here's what the scholarship provides:

Free 6-month skateboarding lessons: Participants will receive comprehensive instruction covering fundamental skills, safety, and skateboarding etiquette.

Open to all: This program is designed to be inclusive and accessible to youth of all backgrounds and abilities.

Experienced Instructor: Learn from a certified professional who is passionate about skateboarding and dedicated to helping students progress.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 

Q: Who is the instructor? 

A: Meet Johnny Brasley. Johnny Brasley is a New Orleans-native skater and is certified as a skateboard educator by the United States Skateboard Education Association. Johnny is and has been skating for 18+ years

Q: How many skateboard scholarships are being awarded? 

A: Transitional Spaces and partners provide an opportunity for up to 20 students to learn how to skateboard or improve their current skill set. 

Q: Do I need to own a skateboard? 

A: No, we will provide you with a complete skateboard deck to use during the Sesh. The skateboard deck must be returned after each lesson. If you already own a complete skateboard, please feel free to bring it.

Q: Do I need to bring and am I required to wear a helmet?

A: If you own a helmet, please bring it. Transitional Spaces will provide helmets for those who do not have one. The student absolutely must wear it during the lessons/Sesh, safety first. 

Q: What do I need to wear or bring? 

A: You do not have to bring anything to the lessons/Sesh except water, a positive attitude and good vibes!  

All students should wear pants and shirts that cover their legs and arms when possible. Skate shoes preferred; tennis or running shoes o.k.  

Do not wear clothing that can’t get ruined, thrashed, dirty, torn, trashed, busted or get holes in it. No open-toe or dress shoes.   

Q: What happens if I or my child falls and get hurt. 

A: No question about it - skateboarding cause injuries such as cuts, scrapes, bruises, bleeding, sprains and in server cases broken bones. Transitional Spaces will take all the precautionary steps to keep our students safe. The skateboard instructor is First Aid certified. In case of a minor injury, Transitional Spaces has a first aid kit onsite and will treat the injury accordingly. Any injuries that Transitional Spaces consider serious such a broken bone, 911 emergency services will be contact as well as the primary contact or guardian.  

All minor injuries or major will be reported to the primary guardian/ contact via phone call, text, or email.   

Q: Does Transitional Spaces or Parisite DIY provide transportation?

A: No 

Q: Does the Scholarship cost anything? 

A: No. The program is being paid for because of the generosity of public donations and private grants from organizations like Essence Communications, Vitalogy Foundation, Humidity Skate Shop and AFROPUNK Media.

Q: I’ve applied to qualify for a skateboard lessons scholarship; what’s next? 

A. You will receive an email confirming your application has been received. Please allow us 3 – 5 business days to review your application and respond.Upon review, Transitional Spaces will email and call the primary contact informing them regarding their status in the program. Unless the applicant is not a minor, almost all applications will be granted a scholarship. The reason main or most of the time an application for a scholarship is not granted is because the class is full. 

A: What if all the classes are full and I cannot receive a scholarship?

Q: If this is the case, the student will be placed on a waiting list for the next enrollment period. This student will receive priority administration for the following enrollment period. 

Q: When will I know if I have received a free skateboarding scholarship?

A: On average it takes about 3 – 5 business days to review an application. All applicants will be notified by Jan. 15th by email and phone call.

Q: Are skateboarding scholarships awarded to anyone over the age of 18 years old.

A: No, not currently. This grant is specifically targeting the youth between the ages of 6 – 17 years old.

Q: How does a student get selected to receive a scholarship? 

A: Scholarships are granted primarily on a “first-come, first-serve” bases.
